THIS is why Americans are hated!

Picture 1

You know, the guy even had the audacity to say he was on the way to the gym and just wanted to give Rover some exercise before he left. ARGH! At least he isn't driving a Mercedes or something - that would really put me over the edge.

Super Mario Cake!

I make a LOT of cakes. It is kind of something I have to do by necessity (food allergy) but grew to really enjoy. I think I like the challenge. I stink at anything artistic or creative, but I feel half way competent at making cakes. I am always looking to stretch my abilities and improve.

A friend's sons (yes, 3 of them) had a birthday recently.   I guess that would be birthDAYS actually.  There are twin 4 year olds and a newly minted 6 year old.  The 6 year old is REALLY into Super Mario. He saw a picture of a Super Mario cake in a magazine and begged his Mom for it. She, being the daring person she is, promised him to give it a go. But with 4 kids and a husband who suddenly needed surgery, I felt that making this Super Mario cake might actually be a way I could help her out.

I was really pleased with how it turned out. Most of the adults commented on how great it looked (and tasted). My friends husband even suggested I go into business (as IF!). But the absolute BEST compliment of the day came from the birthday boy himself.

"I totally love my cake! It's even BETTER than the picture!"

This adorable little boy melted my heart. I'd make him 10 more in a heartbeat. :-)

It’s Not on the Test

A friend in my local homeschool group posted a link to a song that should become the anthem for all homeschoolers, educators, teachers, and parents who recognize that No Child Left Behind is one of the worse things to ever suck the life out of a student.

READ ALOUD: 15 minutes
INDEPENDENT READING: 20 minutes

Played the Place Value Toss game. A grid of 4 spaces is set up on the floor, each representing ones, tens, hundreds, or thousands. Bean bags are tossed and then counted according to each place value. 2 bean bags in the hundreds box means 200. Syd interpreted the info and wrote the numbers. Also discussed higher value numbers and how ALL numbers are just hundreds, tens, and ones. The only thing that changes is the name of the comma. (For example: 356,876,382,892 is really just 356 BILLION 876 MILLION 382 THOUSAND 892.)

Had a spelling test on this weeks words.

Played the Subtraction Tic-Tac-Toe game
